Eid-ul-Fitr Sunset 12th May 2021
Dash Cam Video along Curry Mile, Rusholme with selected stills, taken on the 12th May just after sunset which officially ends Ramadan and starts the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration in the Islamic calendar. The road barriers that were erected to help maintain social distancing, have been removed. Several restaurants and take-a-ways have either been replaced with other eating premises or re-decorated.

The Curry Mile Project aims to document everyday life along this stretch of Wilmslow Road in Rusholme. We also want to show how economic and cultural changes are taking place with the goal of a continuing archive of this multicultural community hub of Manchester. After 6 long years (including a pandemic) our documentary photo book has finally gone to print!! Available to purchase in Mid July 2022 £20 + P&P if required. ‘Curry Mile to Shisha Mile’ records the cultural shift and perception of Wilmslow Road being predominantly curry restaurants and pubs, to a now more diverse and Arabic influenced neighbourhood. Michael Baker & Phil Portus have been active on the streets of Rusholme since 2016, photographing the people, places and events, interviewing locals, recording footage and of course eating a bit too… Book launch and exhibition to follow ……
